It's Christmas time in the City, ya'll! Throughout my ten years in Oklahoma City I've found a handful of holiday activities that have become traditions in the Martin household. I look forward to them every year! I thought I'd share a few of my favorites with you so that you can incorporate them into your family's holiday season, as well. It's truly the most wonderful time of the year - lets live it up and support our city's local businesses in 2021!

Pick out a Tree at the Holiday Pop-Up Shops

First and foremost, you can't have Christmas with a Christmas tree! I've had a real tree my whole life and to this day, picking out the tree it is by far my most favorite Christmas tradition. I prefer a Fraser Fir and I always go to the Bishop John Carroll School Christmas tree lot at the Midtown Pop-Up Shops. While there, be sure to visit the igloo shops surrounding the giant Christmas tree - the shops rotate on a weekly basis to showcase different local businesses each week. The Katiebugs Hot Chocolate trailer is also there to keep you warm!

Bonus: you can also visit Katiebug's brick and mortar location on 9th Street (photo above) - their holiday decor is always top notch!

Watch the Nutcracker

Did you know I danced up until I was a teenager? I even made it to pointe shoes! I still know all the choreography for the Dance of the Flowers in The Nutcracker. I love getting dressed up and seeing the Oklahoma City Ballet's traditional Nutcracker performance each holiday season at the Civic Center! It's incredible to see the talent of their ballerinas and there's nothing quite like watching Clara and the Nutcracker Prince dance their way through the Sugarplum kingdom. This year, 2021, is the 50th year the OKC Ballet has performed The Nutcracker and they will be performing with live music by the OKC Philharmonic and the Canterbury Voices. Get your tickets here and make seeing The Nutcracker part of your Christmas, either as an old tradition or a new one! This year, the show will be held on December 11, 12, 17, 18 and 19.

Take the Pups to A Dog Day in December

Calling all doggies! Santa Paws is coming to the Midtown Mutts Dog Park on December 2 for A Dog Day in December holiday party! There will be pet photos with Santa, free Puppuccinos, and free dog caricatures from 5:30 - 8:00 p.m. I love including my pups in holiday traditions, especially when it's an event just for them.

Run the Santa Run 5k

Run, run Rudolph, Santa Claus is coming to town on December 4! I'm not much of a runner but I'll gladly get in the spirit for Turkey Trots and Santa Runs. The Downtown in December Santa Run is extra fun, despite the cold. A lot of runners dress up for the costume contest, they have their own Spotify playlist to keep you moving, and there are often goodies and treats at the finish line. The best part? The shirts are always MY FAV! Check out other Downtown in December events here... one of these days I'll make it to the Devon Ice Rink!

Go on a Christmas Date

C and I have made it a point to go on a special Christmas date every year since we started dating - it's something I always look forward and enjoy! Our date typically starts off with a holiday themed cocktail happy hour - I hear Chicken N Pickle is doing a holiday themed pop-up bar, Snowbound this year! Drinks are followed by a nice dinner and a holiday activity (seeing The Nutcracker, visiting the Midtown Pop-Ups or ice skating at the Devon Ice Rink would be perfect options). We end the date with a Peppermint Chip milkshake from Chick-fil-a and drink it while driving around to see Christmas lights! Our favorite neighborhood to view the lights is Nichols Hills, but Lights on Broadway and Yukon's Christmas in the Park are great options, as well.

What are your family's holiday traditions? If there are other holiday activities in Oklahoma City that you enjoy, drop them in the comments. I'd love to hear and add them to my holiday fun to-do list! Be sure to grab your tickets to The Nutcracker before they sell out - it would be great for a date night, a mother-daughter tradition or a girl's day brunch activity. The OKC Ballet was kind enough to sponsor this post and I know their performance will fill you and your loved ones with holiday spirit. I can't wait to see it myself opening weekend!

Thanks so much for reading and have a very Merry Christmas!

Thank you to the Oklahoma City Ballet for sponsoring this post!

As always, all thoughts and opinions are my own.
